Karoo Living: What I've learned as a farmer's wife

Posted 30/3/2023

As a farmer's wife living in the Karoo area just outside Prince Albert, I have experienced a world of difference compared to our previous home in the Boland. Moving to this dry area has taught me so much about the resilience of people and the land.

The Karoo is a semi-desert region known for its harsh climate, but it is also home to some of the most beautiful landscapes in South Africa. Moving here has made me appreciate the beauty of this arid region and the unique wildlife that thrives in this environment. I have also learned to respect the land and its resources, as water is scarce and every drop is precious.

Living in the Karoo has given me a new appreciation for the people who live here. They are a hardy and resourceful bunch, with a deep love for the land and a sense of community that is truly inspiring. Everyone here knows each other, and people are always willing to lend a helping hand when needed.

One of the things that have amazed me the most is how people here have adapted to living in such a dry environment. Many of them have learned to collect and store rainwater, and they have become experts at conserving water in every way possible. They have also learned to make the most of the resources available to them, such as using solar power to generate electricity and composting to create fertile soil.

Living in the Karoo has also given me the opportunity to experience some unique and exciting things. We have attended local events like the annual Olive Festival and have met some incredible artists, writers, and musicians who call this region home. We have also explored the surrounding mountains and valleys, discovering hidden gems like the Cango Caves and the Swartberg Pass.

In conclusion, moving to the Karoo has been an eye-opening experience for me. I have learned so much about the resilience of people and the land, and I have been amazed by the unique experiences and opportunities this region has to offer. If you are looking for a place to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and experience the beauty and tranquility of South Africa's semi-desert region, the Karoo is definitely worth a visit.
